A little bit of info on how the day is planned and how YOU can be involved in the 4th Golf Day. For centuries the game of golf has been enjoyed (and sometimes hated!) in this great county of Yorkshire. Be it Parkland, Links or Moorland, there are hundreds of golf courses catering for every golfer. We have the luxury of some big name courses in our region. One of the better known Yorkshire courses, Ganton, was the location of the 2003 Walker Cup, with players on both sides commenting on how the course was "a truly great spectacle." It is rated as the No 1 golf course in Yorkshire. It is a links course of the highest quality and should be treated with great respect. The Westwood course at Beverley & East Riding Golf Club is noted as being arguably the oldest golf course in Yorkshire. Founded in 1889, the course contains a mix of golfing landscape, from parkland, heathland and links. Huddersfield is another of the older clubs in the county with history. In 1906 Harry Vardon, JH Taylor and James Braid competed in an exhibition match on this course. In 1969 another exhibition match took place, this time involving Peter Oosterhuis and Gary Player to name names! Moortown Golf Club (Leeds) which holds the reputation of being one of the countrys best championship courses, hosted the 2nd official ryder cup in 1929. Around two thousand spectators witnessed the event in which Great Britain were victorious over the Americans on the final day. George Duncan (Scotland) became the first British Captain to lift the Ryder Cup, which on this occasion was presented by Samuel Ryder in person. Leeds Golf Club (commonly known as Cobble Hall, is the home of the oldest professional competition in golf, The Leeds Cup. Dating from 1902 the competition has been won by Harry Vardon and Howard Clark amongst others. Alwoodley Golf course was the first to be designed by the famous course architect Dr Alister MacKenzie. It features in the top 100 world courses and is considered Yorkshire's No2 best course. So it isn't hard to see why the game of golf is held in high regard and so popular in this part of the country. This website aims to bring just what it means to play this wonderful game in some of the most beautiful surroundings in the country. Join in with the chat. The amateur golfer is the mainstay of the game, venturing out in all weathers to take on the course and all it can throw at the golfer. There are thousands out there, who take to the course in the rain, snow, wind.....whatever! As long as the course is open, there will always be someone willing to play the game.
